Red Alert! Why It’s Difficult to Get Chocolate Brown Without the Red
Posted by Trudy Petith on 5th Jan 2017
We love chocolate, we can’t deny that. So do our clients. And just like hot chocolate, everyone wants the beautiful chocolate brown hair, without the tiniest serving of red. Is this possible? Whether you’re dying your hair from the box or getting your hair coloured by a professional in the salon, you’re bound to see a few red locks.
No Single Formula
Not all browns are created equally. It’s literally impossible. What might have worked on your friend, doesn’t necessarily fit your mane. We can’t take a colour from a box, and look spectacular. Maybe commercial tell us we can, but we can’t. And if you’re beginning to think hair colouring is sounding more and more like science, it’s true.
Colour History
This is one of the most important factors, because your hairstylist/saviour needs to know what your hair has been treated with. Since this can have a huge effect on how your colour turns out, it’s crucial to be honest with your hairstylist. We’re not here to judge you, we’re here to listen, analyse, be creative and get the problem solved. Lying to your hairdresser is never a good idea, and forgetting to give us details about your hair will lead us to not achieving your desired results.
Perfect Match
When we determined your colour history, we have to create the perfect combination between tones and shades, and match it with your hair. But what is this mambo-jumbo about tones and shades?
*Quick low down*
- Hair colour comes in different tones: warm, neutral or cool.
- Each hair colour also has its own basic shade.
- The perfect combination of the two, compared to your hair creates ultimate results and achieves a specific undertone. This, as you might presume, isn’t an easy task.
Genetics Count
We hate to disappoint you, but sometimes even the best hair magic won’t give you the results of your dreams. Genetics also play a key role, as certain individuals simply have a natural predisposition and red tones in their hair that can’t be hidden even if we had all the magic of this world at our fingertips. Your natural colour and texture plays a huge role, and colour correcting can help, but it won’t cancel out the red forever.
Sometimes the only way to achieve what you want is to go for a different brown than what you were hoping for. For example, if you go for ash brown, you’ll cancel out any red tones in the brown, because ash brown has green undertones that cancel out the redness. If ash brown doesn’t suit your skin tone, you might want to think about dying your hair chocolate brown.
Sometimes even chemicals can’t cancel out the red tones, which is a hard fact ladies, but it’s the truth we have to accept. However, your ideal colour is somewhere out there, and we’re determined to find it for you!
