Hair Nightmares – Perms and Over Processed Hair
Posted by Trudy Petith on 1st Dec 2016
Are you craving beach waves this summer that are going to stay on no matter what? Or are you just bored with your plain, straight hair and long for sexy curls? The return of the perm had us excited, but at the same time begging for the trend to be over. Either because you’re following a trend, or want to make a hair change, before you insist on getting a perm, you need to have a little chat with your hair about over processing and think well and hard about your next perm sesh at the salon.
What is over processed hair anyways? Does your mane fit the category?
Over processed hair basically means hair that needs a break from all the handling. This means, you’re either heating it too much, perming, straightening, relaxing it. Whatever the treatment is, if you’re overdoing it, you’ve probably exhausted your hair’s patience. Which is why perms on over processed hair are never a good idea.
A perm on fragile, damaged, over processed hair is just like pouring a can of gasoline on an already open fire. You’re just going to make the flame bigger. Your hair needs to catch a break. Between all the colouring, perming, curling and straightening, you need to give your hair vacation time to relax, recuperate and breathe. It’s important to treat your hair right in between these sessions and do all that you can to keep your hair healthy and strong, without risking breakage and permanent damage. Perm on perm, on top of perm isn’t going to fix the problem or mask it. Unless you want PERManent damage, strike a pause ladies.
So what can you do?
What you can do is get a haircut, nourish your hair with professional treatments for damaged hair or at home masques, and give your hair some time off. What we don’t recommend is you schedule another perm session and risk frying your hair. Keeping your hair healthy should be your priority, otherwise no hairdo is going to give you the beautiful style you want. Health is beauty.
